Kitekite Falls in the Waitakere Ranges
10 to 15 minutes into the walk alongside a stream, I arrive at a crossroads and take the track straight ahead. It takes me down to a stream crossing where the path continues up a short incline until I arrive at another junction - I take a left here and head down towards Kitekite. All I have to do is follow the sound of running water.
Before long the track opens up into a clearing and the falls are right in front of me. On a warm day, you can comfortably soak in the pools at the bottom. You can also hike up to the top of the falls, where there are further pools and an amazing view.
This is an easy walk, just 45 minutes either way if you're taking the time to soak in the surroundings. An alternative, more energetic, route of around two hours is up Piha Valley Track to Black Rock Dam. The track then ascends up Centennial to the southern ridge and out of the Piha Valley, where it links with the Home Track and then Winstone. Follow Winstone and you will end up at the top of Kitekite Falls. This is the perfect place for a picnic lunch - and you'll have certainly deserved it! Afterwards follow the Kitekite Track back to Piha. What better way to escape the city?
